Warm Up Counties Manukau
Warm Up Counties Manukau is an insulation retrofit project supported by the Energywise™ Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart programme to insulate the homes of low-income households in the Counties Manukau region with particular focus on high health-need families.
This programme provides GreenStuf® ceiling and underfloor insulation for up to 1,000 homes in the Counties Manukau DHB region per year at no cost to the homeowner. The programme focuses on insulating the homes of families that are at the most health risk (i.e. pregnant woman, babies, children under 14 years of age or older adults aged over 65 years, with housing related health conditions such as respiratory disease).
Counties Manukau have a high number of potentially avoidable hospitalisations which can be attributed to poor housing. Housing is a key determinant of health, and the impacts of inadequate housing can be effectively measured using Ambulatory Sensitive Admissions. These are hospital admissions that are considered potentially preventable through the implementation of initiatives aimed at targeting the cause – such as inadequately insulated houses.
By delivering Warm Up Counties Manukau as well as improving access to health and social services we believe we will see a corresponding drop in housing related preventable hospitalisations, and that’s better for everyone.
To be eligible for the free GreenStuf® home insulation, Counties Manukau residents need to have a home built before 1st January 2000, have a valid Community Services Card, and own their own home or rent privately (not a Housing NZ home).
Priority will be given to families with babies, children (under 14 years), pregnant women and seniors (over 65 years) living with housing related health conditions.
